Understand the difference between dreams, goals, and expectations. Dreams live in far off places. They may come to us while we walk, hike, bike or take a shower. I like to think of dreams as the shining gemstones, just out of reach. Knowing that we have the desire to reach out and grab these gemstones gives us the motivation to get out of bed each morning.
Goals are specific, measurable, achievable, results-focused and time bound items. Goals are things we’re actually going to do and commit to doing. I equate expectations to a yardstick.
When ideas, dreams or goals come into our conscious and unconscious minds we develop a measuring sticking and we hold everything up to this measuring stick.
When people, events, or experiences don’t measure up the our internal expectations we go berserk. This freak out may happen internally or it may happen externally, but all the same it happens. This deflates our ability to grow and progress in our companies and lives.
